ABOUT DEEP LISTENING
Deep Listening originates in Pauline Oliveros’s childhood fascination with sounds and from her work in composition, improvisation and electro-acoustics. She describes Deep Listening as “a way of listening in every possible way, to everything possible to hear, no matter what you are doing”. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one’s own thoughts as well as more traditionally ‘musical’ sounds.

For WITHIN/Infinite Ear, Pauline Oliveros is accompanied by playwright and sound artist Ione. Together they offer Deep Listening sessions which will explore the relationship between sounds and dreams, based on Ione’s 2005 book Listening in Dreams. These sessions, running from 3–4 September, will inform a new composition by Pauline Oliveros to be presented at the opening weekend of Bergen Assembly’s September programme.

Pauline Oliveros is a composer, performer, humanitarian and senior figure in contemporary American music whose work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual has profoundly influenced experimentation in music from the 1960s onward. Awarded the John Cage Award in 2012 from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts, Oliveros is Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and Darius Milhaud Artist-in-Residence at Mills College in Oakland, California. She is the originator of Deep Listening – also her life practice – and founder of the Deep Listening Institute. In 1989, John Cage remarked: “Through Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening, I finally know what harmony is… It’s about the pleasure of making music.”

Ione is an author, playwright and director. She is also an accomplished psychotherapist, specialising in myth and heritage, dream phenomena and women’s issues. Ione conducts retreats throughout the world. She is the founding director of the Ministry of Maåt, Inc. (MoM, Inc.) and former artistic director of the Deep Listening Institute.
