Curated by Mao Mollona, The End of Oil explores possible scenarios associated with the decline of the oil-based economy in Norway. With the prosperity of the oil-boom years likely coming to an end and society finding itself on the brink of an infrastructural change, these scenarios relate to questions about our relationship with nature in a wider sense.

The End of Oil comprises two artists’ films. Oilers by Anne Marthe Dyvi and Mao Mollona, follows the construction of Edvard Grieg, a Norwegian off-shore oil platform, one of the largest oil platforms to be built operating in the North Sea, with accommodation for 500 workers. Made in collaboration with the Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts (BEK), the film was shot over one year, and shows the workers’ experience in the context of the global decline in oil prices and rising unemployment. Delete Beach by Phil Collins is an animated short in the style of Japanese anime which combines elements of sci-fi and fantasy to tell a story set in the future around Bergen and the Hardangerfjord. It is co-produced by HAU Hebbel am Ufer (Berlin) through funding provided by the German Federal Cultural Foundation within the framework of ‘The Aesthetics of Resistance – Peter Weiss 100’.
